YARDS TO HAVE OWN NEWSPAPERS

BEGINNING the second week in March each of the three Kaiser shipyards in this area will have its own individual weekly newspaper. The Bo's'n's Whistle, as a 16-page semi-monthly magazine, will disappear.

Actually, it will not be a disappearance so much as a change in physical appearance and scope of activities. The Newspapers will also be called the Bo's'n's Whistle, but there will be separate Oregon Ship, Swan Island and Vancouver editions. Each yard's paper will have eight tabloid size pages, four of which will be devoted to the individual yard's own particular interests and four of which will contain material of interest to all three yards.

Each yard will maintain its own editorial office and staff of yard editors and reporters. Qualified persons to fill these positions are now being sought.

During November and December, 1943, an experimental newspaper, the "Flat Top Flash," was published weekly at Vancouver to aid the "18 or More By '44" drive. This paper was eight pages in size and was so popular that it is now being continued in a four-page size. It will be merged with the new Bo's'n's Whistle when the change is made in March.

The new paper will carry on the average from 12 to 14 thousand words of story material compared to from four to six thousand words carried in the present Bo's'n's Whistle. Also, by appearing every week instead of twice a month it will give the reader between four and five times as much news in the same period of time. Heavy emphasis will be placed on more news and pictures about the workers and their activities. Contributions from men and women will be sought, and expression of opinion will be invited.
