...CUTS STEEL FOR VICTORYS
THAT America's plans for post-war shipping were not idle dreams, was brought home to Oregon ship workers October 25 when the first keel plate for Hull 1001, first of the postwar Victory ships was cut in the O.S.C. plate shop. Shown at right, guiding travograph cutter as it bites through of the first of 105 Victorys on Oregon's contract, are N. C. Laplonte

in foreground, and E. R. Anderson, rear. Only four yards in the United States were considered outstanding enough to be awarded the Victory contract and of these Oregon was named No. 1.


. . WINS GOLD WREATH AWARD
They're sitting up nights lately to

figure out new awards for the nation's fastest merchant shipyard. Latest of these is the gold wreath award to be presented to Oregon shipworkers in recognition of 22 consecutive deliveries of Libertys in less than 105 days --a walkaway for the shipbuilding men and women of O. S. C.
279Mrs. Bruce Woodell, wife of the O.S.C. outfitting dock supervisor, christened the SS "Albert A. Michelson" on October 20. Her attendants were Mrs. E. A. Anderson and Mrs. A. L. Hoyt.
276The SS " Watson C. Squire" was launched on October 15. Sponsor was Miss Dorothy Feeney. Her attendants were Mrs. Frank Feeney and Mrs. Shirl Squire.
282Mrs. Eldon Lents, wife of the O.S.C. assistant office manager, christened the SS "J. Warren Keifer" on October 25. Mr. Lents gave the principal address.
277Mrs. Cletus L. Miniham christened the SS "Stephen G. Porter," Oregon's 27th Liberty, October 16. Sponsor is the wife of the acting resident auditor of the U.S.M.C. in Portland.
283Oregon's 283rd Liberty, the SS "William H. Dall" was launched October 27. Sponsor was Miss Marion Hope Shirley, daughter of the USMC plant engineer. Commander E. W. Hoffman
was the principal speaker.
280The SS " Edmond G. Ross" was launched on October 22. Sponsor was Mrs. Lorraine Belle Happenbauer, day shift electrician. Her attendants were Mrs. James Laird and Mrs. Harry S. Summerkamp.
278October 18th marked the launching of the SS "Abbot L. Mills," sponsored by Mrs. F. A. W. Anger, wife of the assistant erection superintendent. Mr. W. C. Schuppell spoke.
284Sponsor of SS "James H. Lane" on October 29 was Mrs. John A. Roberts, wife of a crew foreman of the National Tile & Marble Co.
281The SS "Peter White" went down the Oregon ways on October 23, christened by Mrs. Clara M. Anderson of the rigging department.
285No. 285 on Oregon's list was the SS "William D. Hoard," christened by Mrs. Donald J. Sterling, wife of the managing editor of the Oregon journal, in ceremonies attended by Oregon publishers.
