VANCOUVER
launched its 13th aircraft carrier on Wednesday, October 6. It was
the USS "Nassuk Bay." Sponsor for the carrier was Mrs. F.
S. McKenna, wife of Captain McKenna of the navy's pre-commissioning
detail at Astoria. Her husband delivered the principal address. Mike
Miller, manager of the yard, was master of ceremonies and gave a short
talk. Elizabeth McKenna, daughter of the sponsor, was flower girl,
and Mrs. Giles E. Short was matron of honor. |

Austin F. Flegel, wife of the executive vice-president of Willamette
Iron Steel Corporation, sponsored the SS " William H. Ashley"
on October 6. |

October 8 the SS " W. W. McCrackin" slid down the ways with
Miss Joycelyn Fleming as sponsor. Walter D. Martini was master of
ceremonies. |

Zimmerman, popularity contest winner from Vancouver yard, sponsored
the SS "Francis N. Blanchet" on October 9. Rex Hamby,
Vancouver office manager, was the speaker.

The
SS " Charles F. Amidon" slid down the ways on October 11
sponsored by Mrs. Vera Belden. H. W. Hockett, superintendent of the
plate shop, was principal speaker. |

The
SS "Mechanicsville" was launched at Swan Island on Saturday,
October 2. The new tanker was sponsored by Mrs. Albert E. Nickerson,
above. At the left is her husband, who is director of the Bureau
of Placement of the War Manpower Commission, from Washington, D.
C. At the right is Captain Water, who will take charge of the vessel
upon delivery.

On
October 8 another tanker, the SS "Champoeg," was launched.
Mrs. Duncan Gardiner, wife of Swan Island's mold loft superintendent,
was sponsor. On the left is her daughter, Jane Doreen, maid of honor,
and at the right is Mrs. Cozette Bennett, matron of honor. Leslie
Scott, state treasurer of Oregon, delivered the principal address.

the SS "Joseph M. Carey" launched October 13. |
