Once upon a time, sea water used to be fresh, not salty. This story explains why it turned salty..

Salt Water

There was a country boy named Hok'hai. His father passed away when he was little. He and his mother lived a poor life. Every day he choped firewood in the mountains and sells it to buy food.

One day, he was exhausted from chopping wood and fell asleep. He had a dream, where an old man with silver hair walked up to him and said: Hok'hai, you have been a good, hard working boy. I have been sent here to help you. I'm giving you this salt grinder. All you have to do is to tell it "Grind!" three times, and it will grind out salt. To stop it, just tell it "Stop!" three times.

As soon as the old man finished talking, he turned into a puff of smoke and disappeared.
Hok'hai woke up and saw the salt grinder by his side. He was nervous but excited, and he tried it out as instructed by the old man. The salt grinder did start and stop producing salt as predicted.

Hok'hai was very happy and ran home with the salt grinder in his arms. Salt was not abundant and was expensive at the time. Hok'hai was able to sell the salt produced by the grinder and started living a better life.

The story about Hok'hai's fortune spread fast, and his greedy uncle Akoei (pronounced either [ahQuay or ahKay]) heard about it. He went to Hok'hai's place to find out where the salt came from.

Hok'hai was a trusting person, and he told the whole story. He even showed his uncle how the salt grinder worked. The jealous uncle started plotting ideas so he could profit for himself. On a moonless, windy night, Uncle Akoei sneaked into Hok'hai's house and stole the salt grinder.

He had prepared a row boat by the sea shore, so he could settle in a different town and become rich selling salt. On the boat, Uncle Akoei could not wait to try out the salt grinder for himself. "Grind! Grind! Grind! Ha ha ha! I want more! I want more!" exclaimed Uncle Akoei.

The grinder churns out more and more salt faster and faster. While Akoei was drown in his joy, suddenly the boat became too heavy for the salt and sank, taking Akoei and the grinder down with it.

The grinder continues making more salt at the bottom of the sea.

The sea water has since become salty.
